Thunderbird natively syncs the calendar (CalDAV) and contacts (CardDAV) of your SwissCenter email address, without any add-on. An appointment added in Thunderbird shows up in webmail and on your other synced devices, and the other way round.
In short: in Thunderbird, add a calendar On the Network then a CardDAV address book, with your full email address as Username and mail01.swisscenter.com as Location. The WebDAV (calendars and contacts) service must be set to Yes.
Prerequisites
- A recent version of Thunderbird (CalDAV and CardDAV sync is built in).
- Your full email address and the password of this mailbox. If it has been forgotten, the hosting owner can change it from the Apanel console (see Change the password of an e-mail address).
- The WebDAV (calendars and contacts) service must be set to Yes in the Services tab of the address, in the Apanel console (see Manage the services of an e-mail address). Without it, Thunderbird finds neither a calendar nor an address book.
Before you start
- A single server address is enough:
mail01.swisscenter.com. Thunderbird finds your calendars and address books on its own from that name. If the E-mail SSL server name (POP3S / IMAPS / SMTPS) line of the Misc informations box, in Hosting management, shows another name, use that one.
- Addresses ending in
/caldav/… or /carddav/…, given by older guides, do not work: our server does not answer on those paths.
- If you have turned on two-factor authentication in webmail, your usual password is rejected: use the WebDAV (Microsoft Outlook, etc.) application password instead (see Two-factor authentication (2FA) in webmail).
- The calendar and the contacts are set up separately, with the same information.
- The labels below are those of Thunderbird in English; they may vary slightly from one version to another.
How do I add the calendar?
-
In Thunderbird, open Calendar.
-
Right-click in the calendar list on the left and choose New Calendar….
-
In the Add calendar window, choose On the Network, then click Next.
-
Fill in:
- Username: your full email address;
- Location:
mail01.swisscenter.com.
Leave This location doesn't require credentials unticked.
-
Click Find Calendars. Enter the mailbox password when Thunderbird asks for it.
-
Tick the calendar or calendars to show, then click Subscribe.
The calendar appears in the list, and its existing appointments show up after the first sync.
How do I add the contacts?
- Open the Address Book.
- Choose Add CardDAV Address Book: depending on your Thunderbird version, this entry sits under the New Address Book button or under the add address book button, above the list of address books.
- Fill in:
- Username: your full email address;
- Location:
mail01.swisscenter.com.
- Click Continue, then enter the mailbox password when Thunderbird asks for it.
- Under Available address books, tick the address book or books to sync, then click Continue.
Your webmail contacts appear in the new address book.
What if automatic discovery fails?
Webmail shows the exact WebDAV address of your account:
- Log in to webmail, for example from the Webmail button in the E-mail addresses list of the Apanel console.
- Click Settings: the Account page opens.
- In the WebDAV card, copy the WebDAV Link (copy icon to the right of the field).
- Paste this link into Thunderbird's Location field instead of
mail01.swisscenter.com, then search again.
Troubleshooting
| What you see |
What to do |
| The credentials you have entered were not accepted |
Check that the username is the full email address, @ and domain included, and that the password is the mailbox password (try it in webmail). If two-factor authentication is on, use the WebDAV (Microsoft Outlook, etc.) application password. |
| Could not find calendars at this location, or Found no address books to add for the specified account |
Check that the WebDAV (calendars and contacts) service of the address is set to Yes in the Apanel console, then try with the WebDAV Link from webmail. |
| A certificate error |
Check that the location is exactly mail01.swisscenter.com, and that the computer's date and time are correct. |
| The calendar used to work and no longer syncs |
The mailbox password may have changed: update it in Thunderbird's password manager. |
