The name of your domain's email server is shown in the Apanel console: open Hosting management and read, in the Misc informations box on the left, the line E-mail SSL server name (POP3S / IMAPS / SMTPS). It only appears when the email service is active on the domain. The examples in this article use mail01.swisscenter.com, the SmarterMail email server; if your console shows another name, use the one from the console.

Why port 465? Since RFC 8314 (2018), implicit TLS on port 465 is the recommended standard for SMTP submission: encryption is in place from the first byte, without a plaintext phase. Port 587 remains functional and compatible.

Quick troubleshooting
| Symptom |
Probable cause |
Action |
| "Unable to verify certificate" |
TLS inspection by a corporate firewall, or system clock offset |
Check the device's date and time; on a corporate network, contact the administrator |
| Receiving works, sending fails |
SMTP authentication not enabled, or port 465 blocked outbound |
Check that SMTP authentication is enabled with the same credentials as IMAP. On a restricted network (hotel, hotspot), switch to 587 with STARTTLS |
| Password rejected |
Typo, or password changed without updating the device |
Re-enter the password; check that the username is indeed the full email address |
| Very slow or expired connection |
Port 465 blocked by the network |
Try port 587 with STARTTLS |
Frequently asked questions
Is port 465 not obsolete?
No. It was briefly discouraged in the late 1990s, but RFC 8314 (January 2018) officially rehabilitated it under the name submissions, and now recommends it as a priority over STARTTLS on 587. Many online documentations have not been updated.
What is the concrete difference between 465 and 587?
- 465 (Implicit TLS): encryption starts from the first byte: no plaintext phase, no risk of downgrade.
- 587 (STARTTLS): the connection opens in plaintext, then upgrades to TLS. Slightly more exposed to downgrade attacks if the client is misconfigured.
Both ports remain functional and compliant. 465 is our default recommendation; 587 remains available for older clients or networks that block it.
And POP3?
Available if necessary: mail01.swisscenter.com, port 995, SSL/TLS. Reserve this for cases where you check your mail from a single device. For multi-device usage, use IMAP.
