Your hosting invoice lists Renouvellement de domaine (domain renewal) lines for domain names you paid for only recently, sometimes a few weeks earlier by credit card? You are not being billed twice: these lines pay for the next year of each domain, not the one you have already paid for. This article explains how to read these lines and why they come so early.
In short: the date after "(m/d)" in the line is the domain's renewal day (month/day). The hosting invoice covers a whole year, paid in advance, and it includes every domain whose renewal falls within that year. The line therefore pays for the domain year that starts on that day, not the one you paid for when you ordered.
What you need to know
- A domain attached to your hosting has no renewal invoice of its own. When you order or transfer a domain from the domain names console, you pay for the first year with the order. Once that invoice is paid, the domain is added to your hosting contract: its following renewals appear on the hosting invoice.
- The day shown on the line is the day the order was paid. A domain paid on 14 August comes back every year on the "08/14" line. The Renew date shown in the domain names console can differ by a few days, when the order was placed before it was paid.
- The hosting invoice is issued in advance, a few weeks before the start of the period it covers. It includes every domain whose renewal day falls between the first and the last day of that period.
- Domains renewed on the same day are grouped on a single line, with the matching quantity.
How to read a domain renewal line
In the invoice detail, under the hosting contract, you first find the billing period, then the renewable services (the hosting, billed monthly), then the services billed independently of the monthly instalments, where the domains are listed. The description of a domain line is always written in French:
| What you read |
What it means |
| Renouvellement de domaine (m/d) 08/14. |
The domain or domains on this line are renewed on 14 August (m/d = month/day). |
| The names under the description |
The domains concerned, separated by dashes. |
| Quantity |
The number of domains renewed on that day. |
| Monthly instalments: "-" |
The domain is paid yearly: it is not spread over monthly instalments. |
An example
You order votresite.ch in the domain names console and pay by card on 14 August 2026. This payment covers the first year, until 14 August 2027.
On 14 September 2026, you receive the invoice for your hosting for the billing period 1 November 2026 - 31 October 2027. It contains the line Renouvellement de domaine (m/d) 08/14. for votresite.ch.
| Date |
What is paid |
| 14 August 2026, by card |
The first year of votresite.ch: from 14 August 2026 to 14 August 2027 |
| 14 September 2026, hosting invoice |
The hosting from 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027, and the renewal of votresite.ch on 14 August 2027, which covers the year until 14 August 2028 |
The renewal of 14 August 2027 falls within the hosting period being billed: it therefore appears on this invoice, paid in advance like the hosting. The two payments cover two different years of the domain.
The later a domain's renewal day falls in the hosting period, the earlier it is paid: a domain renewed on 30 October 2027 also appears on the invoice of 14 September 2026. A domain renewed after 31 October 2027 does not: it will come on the invoice for the following period.
What if I no longer want a domain?
Schedule its deletion in the domain names console: see Manage your domain names in the domain names console. Once the domain has been deleted, it is no longer included on the following hosting invoices.
If its line already appears on an issued invoice, it does not disappear from it by itself: open a request stating the invoice number and the domain name.
