After sending an email, you receive an error message like this:
Recipient address rejected: Over quota
550 sorry, user over quota
In short: the error comes from your recipient's mailbox, which is full or refuses a message that is too large: ask them to empty their mailbox, or send a download link rather than an attachment.
What does the "Over quota" error mean?
The error originates from your recipient's mailbox, not yours. There are two possible causes:
- their mailbox has reached its maximum storage capacity;
- or the message you are sending is too large for their mailbox.
Your own hosting is not at fault: you cannot resolve the issue from your side.
What should I do about this error?
Contact your recipient via another method and ask them to:
- empty their mailbox to free up space;
- or what the maximum message size is that they can receive, if you were attempting to send a large attachment.
For a file that is too heavy, prefer a download link rather than an attachment.
What if your own mailbox is full?
If your correspondents receive this error when writing to you, it is your own mailbox that is full or that refuses a message that is too large. Free up space or increase its quota: see Mailbox full: increase the quota of an e-mail address. The limits applied at SwissCenter, including the maximum message size, are described in the article on mailbox limits.
